CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — On April 18, police officers and medical personnel responded to a behavioral emergency at a residence on Oak Lane. According to police, a resident called dispatch reporting intruders hiding in the ventilation system and a self-inflicted gunshot wound to her finger. Authorities said this was the latest in a series of calls to the same address within the past 24 hours, all reporting similar intruder complaints with no evidence found.
Scene Assessment
Upon arrival, officers located the caller pacing in the driveway with her left hand wrapped in a blood-soaked towel. Officers said she was agitated and stated that her son and his four children had broken into the home and were hiding in the ventilation system.
Officers cleared the home and found no signs of forced entry or anyone inside. Medics arrived and determined the gunshot wound to her index finger appeared to be several days old.
Conflicting Statements and Investigation
The caller reportedly admitted to officers that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Her husband, contacted by authorities, attributed his wife’s behavior to a possible adverse reaction to new cancer medication and significant sleep deprivation.
Officers discovered drug paraphernalia within the home, raising further concerns.
Hospital Follow-up
At the hospital, the caller gave a rambling account of the incident. She claimed to have heard an intruder in her closet and fired a shot through the door. During the process, she said she injured herself while attempting to clear a malfunction.
The Investigation Continues
She was transported to Grant Hospital for further evaluation. Police collected evidence from the scene, and the investigation into this incident is ongoing.
