CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Union Township Fire Department is relocating its annual Trunk or Treat event across the street from its usual spot at the firehouse this year, after construction at the station forced organizers to find a new home for the free community gathering.
The event is set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Mound Waste & Recycling, directly across from Union Township Fire Station 1 at 12034 Pleasant Valley Road, the department said in a Facebook post. Mound Waste & Recycling offered up its lot for the evening so the department could keep the tradition going while work continues at the station.
“Last year’s turnout was incredible, and we’re hoping to make this year even bigger and better,” the department said in its announcement, inviting families to come in costume with candy buckets in hand.
Union Township Fire is an all-volunteer department that operates out of multiple stations and covers the Union-Scioto school district area just outside Chillicothe. Station 1 has been in the middle of a facility upgrade this year — the department held a public forum in August to brief residents on plans for a new EMS facility at the Pleasant Valley Road site, though officials have not released a construction timeline or finalized cost for the project.
Trunk or Treat events, where local organizations decorate vehicle trunks and hand out candy from a parking lot, have become a staple of fall safety programming for fire departments across the region, giving children a controlled, well-lit alternative to traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating.
The department asked residents to help spread the word about the new location by sharing its announcement.
