WASHINGTON, D.C.— Iran launched a missile strike in northern Iraq on Sunday.
According to reports, the strike was near the U.S. consulate in Erbil, Iraq. A senior U.S. official told the Associated Press that no injuries or damage to the consulate were reported.
The attack was the first such strike inside the country since Iran responded to the death of Qasem Soleimani. Soleimani was one of Iran’s most prolific military generals. His death came after then-President Donald Trump launched a drone strike on Soleimani’s convoy.
The U.S. State Department told national media that there was no indication the consulate was the primary target of the attack.
