CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — The Sofidel Group, a major manufacturer in Central Ohio, is in the midst of a significant expansion, but recent developments have cast a shadow over the company’s growth plans.
The Italy-based company, which established its first U.S. production facility in Circleville in 2016, is currently undergoing a $185 million expansion project. This expansion, announced last month, aims to add another 500,000 square feet to the existing 1.8 million-square-foot facility, along with additional machinery to increase production capacity.
While the expansion promises potential job opportunities for the region, Sofidel has found itself under scrutiny for various labor-related issues. Recent investigations by The Guardian have revealed allegations of anti-union activities, discriminatory hiring practices, and other concerning behaviors reported to the United States Labor Relations Board.
Workers at the Circleville facility have raised concerns about alleged unsafe working conditions and the company’s resistance to union representation. Multiple formal complaints have been lodged with the National Labor Relations Board, with employees citing instances of intimidation, harassment, and termination for advocating unionization.
An anonymous employee emphasized the importance of organizing for safer working conditions without fear of reprisal. However, reports indicate that Sofidel management has actively discouraged unionization efforts, with allegations of open threats against employees supportive of unions.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has conducted investigations into Sofidel, uncovering safety violations, including a severe injury incident in 2019 and subsequent fines exceeding $77,000 for serious violations in 2022.
Leaked documents and employee testimonies shed light on Sofidel’s purported anti-union stance, with management allegedly warning against the perceived drawbacks of union representation and displaying anti-union signs within the facility.
Complaints filed with the United States National Labor Relations Board over the past two years range from refusal to negotiate with unions to punitive actions against pro-union employees. Some cases remain under investigation, while others await resolution pending appeals.
In addition to labor disputes, allegations of mistreatment based on sexual orientation have surfaced, with a former employee reporting hostility from supervisors and human resources, leading to termination.
As Sofidel Group expands its operations in Circleville, the company faces mounting pressure to address labor concerns and ensure a safe and fair working environment for its employees.
