CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The City of Chillicothe has initiated Phase II of its Sidewalk Repair Program, a project aimed at improving pedestrian pathways throughout the city. The program underscores the importance of sidewalks in providing safe access to schools, businesses, and community events, while also ensuring a clear separation between pedestrians and vehicular traffic.
Under Chillicothe Codified Ordinance 903.01, property owners are responsible for the upkeep of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters adjacent to their properties. To assist with these responsibilities, the Sidewalk Repair Program offers financial support, with the city covering 50% of sidewalk repair costs up to $1,000 and 50% of repair costs for sidewalks, curbs, and gutters combined up to $2,000.
The deadline for applications is September 20, 2024, with project approvals expected by September 27, 2024. Priority will be given to projects based on the necessity of the repairs. The city mandates that all work be carried out by private, bonded contractors who are registered with Chillicothe’s Building Department. Property owners are encouraged to obtain multiple estimates to ensure competitive pricing. The repairs must meet the City’s Standard Specifications, as outlined in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Construction and Materials Specifications sections 608 and 609.
Property owners are also responsible for any tree removal associated with curb or sidewalk repairs. Coordination with the Tree Commission is required for both the removal and replacement of trees.
Additional details, including application forms and a list of registered contractors, can be found on the City of Chillicothe’s website.
