The Guardian is excited to announce that we have taken the first step into growing our publication. Today, we have launched our smartphone applications to the world!
“We are currently the leading news source for the area,” said Derek Myers, the Guardian’s editor. “This will allow us to stay the breaking news leader for the counties we serve by alerting viewers to news instantly.”
The app will include popular features already offered on our website, such as our top stories, obituaries, crime maps, and LIVE video!
To promote the launch of the app, the Guardian is giving away rent money — or mortgage — to one lucky winner.
“Home for the Holidays” is the name of the promotion, where all you have to do is share this image publicly on social media by clicking here, download the app, register, and enable push notifications to be entered. One lucky person will be chosen to have their rent (or mortgage) paid in 2020.
In addition to the launch of the app, itself, the Guardian is launching a new “SPOTTERS!” network. This unique one-of-kind feature built into the app allows viewers to get paid to submit pictures and videos of breaking news based on geographic location.
“If there’s a fire or accident close by your location, you will get a push notification that something is happening in your area and that we are looking for someone to take pictures of the scene for us,” Myers said. “You can easily submit the media through the app and you will be paid the next business day via PayPal.”
Myers said it is a fun way for people to make extra cash while helping deliver the news to the community and being a part of living local history.
The rent sweepstakes runs until the end of January. “The Guardian” is available on iPhone and Android devices for free by visiting the respective app store.
