The Ross County Sheriff’s office announced Wednesday morning that they would be issuing a statement later today regarding the compromise of their internal network systems.
The Guardian broke the story on Tuesday that hackers infiltrated the Sheriff’s office’s internal servers through email communication, which spread rapidly once inside.
The hackers had access to “everything” stored on the computers at the Sheriff’s office, according to internal documents shown to the Guardian.
As of Monday afternoon, the hackers still had access to the databases. The Guardian has asked the Sheriff what information, if any, was stolen, and how citizens could find out if their information was at risk. The Sheriff’s Captain, Mike Preston, simply replied to the Guardian and said that a statement would be issued later today.
Sources inside the law enforcement complex told the Guardian that the Sheriff’s office has contacted their insurance company for help and are working with lawyers from the insurance company to “heavily craft” the statement that will be issued today in order to protect themselves from any potential liability.
The Guardian will update you with the Sheriff’s comments once they are released.
