COLUMBUS, Ohio — Republican State Senator’s are seeking to add a “asset test” for those seeking SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.
The Ohio State Senate added to its budget proposal a provision that would cut SNAP benefits for individuals that have saved up to $2,250 or more.
The state would also require a “asset test” for all benefit recipients. This would entail checking bank accounts and property databases, according to state Republicans.
SNAP eligibility is currently determined by income. According to ODJFS, those who earn below 130% of the federal poverty line can receive benefits.
The current proposal would require ODJFS to check the assets of current recipients and future applicants and base eligibility on assets and not just income.
Senate President Steve Huffman, said “the goal of the policy is to get people who take advantage of the social safety net out of the system.”
Anti-poverty, and anti-hunger groups have taken to social media in protest of the current proposal.
The House and Senate have passed separate budget proposals but the two sides must agree to a final version before Gov. Mike DeWine can sign it.
