HIGHLAND COUNTY, Ohio — A Highland County man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on hate crime charges.
According to the United States Department of Justice, Tre Genco, 21, Hillsboro, plotted to carry out a mass shooting at a college in Ohio.
Federal agents said they raided the home of Genco on Wednesday. He was taken into custody without incident.
Federal prosecutors said Genco called himself an “Incel.” Justice Department officials say that the “Incel Movement” is an online community of men who hate women and members of the movement promote violence against women.
Court records say Genco created a manifesto saying he would “slaughter women.” According to officials, on the same day, Genco wrote his manifesto he made online searches for sororities and colleges in Ohio.
In a press release, federal authorities said law enforcement agents found a written letter from Genco stating that he wished he could kill 3,000 people.
Officials said that Genco purchased tactical gear in 2019 and attended Army Basic Training in Georgia the same year. The U.S. Army said he was discharged for performance and conduct.
According to the Highland County Sheriff, deputies were dispatched to Genco’s residence in 2020. Deputies said they located an assault rifle with a bump-stock attachment, several rounds of ammunition, body armor, and handguns that were missing serial numbers.
Genco was charged with one count of attempting to commit a hate crime and one count of illegally possessing a machine gun.
Federal authorities say the hate crime charge carries a possible life sentence.
