PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — The former fiscal officer for the Village of New Holland has accepted a plea deal after she was indicted for theft-in-office.
Mavis Yourchuck, 75, will spend one year on probation and pay back nearly $350 in restitution as part of an agreement she reached with prosecutors. She was also given a six month suspended prison sentence, which means she will only be sent to the penitentiary if she violates her community control probation or is charged with another theft offense.
The former guardian of finances was indicted in May.
Documents released by the village outline that Yourchuck was a part time employee who had asked to be given full time wages. In a village council meeting, council members voted to not give her full time employment and chose to discuss the matter another time.
Former Police Chief Chris Mosley said that after the meeting, Yourchuck used her position as fiscal officer to access the town’s payroll database and changed her status to full time.
“On January 1st, 2020, Mavis took it upon herself too [sic] change her pay scale [sic] to full time status without council approval,” Mosley wrote in a report.
Once an employee reaches full-time status they receive a $500 a month stipend for health insurance, Mosley said. The village said Yourchuck received four checks before the matter was caught.
Last year, she was fired from her position by then-mayor, Vivian Wood. Wood said that Yourchuck admitted to the theft.
Mosley said the matter was sent to the Pickaway County Sheriff for charges, who issued an indictment.
The Guardian was the first to report the news of Yourchuck’s saga. In addition, the Guardian wrote that this was not the first time allegations of Yourchuck stealing were made.
