ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio — One person is dead following an early morning crash in Athens County.
According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, around 4 a.m. Wednesday, a car on Rock Riffle Road when it veered off the left side of the road, hit a signpost, and then a piece of construction equipment.
Reports say the vehicle, a 2015 Volkswagen GTI burst into flames upon impact with the construction equipment.
The vehicle, officials say, was completely engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived on the scene.
The identity of the driver was not immediately released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Troopers with the patrol suspect alcohol, and high speeds may have been a factor in the crash.
