WASHINGTON, DC — Changes are coming to the United States Postal Service, and some say not for the better.
Officials with the USPS said mail delivery would begin slowing down this week.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s announced an overhaul of the U.S. Postal Service to cut costs.
Officials say mail delivery delays will start Friday, October 1. The current one to three-day delivery period could increase to five days depending on the location. Mail traveling from New York to Los Angeles could take nearly a week to arrive.
Those at the Postal Service said mail delivered within a general region shouldn’t be affected. Most first-class mail and periodicals within a state should still experience the standard two-day delivery period.
Along with delays, the price for commercial and retail packages will increase from October 3 to December 26.
Over a billion packages were delivered across the country during the 2020 holiday season, according to the USPS.
The changes, officials say, are part of a 10-year plan to help revitalize the postal service.
