CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Investigators say two kids may face criminal charges after they caused a train derailment in Chillicothe.
According to Chillicothe Police, officers were dispatched to Douglas Avenue last week after a train that had jumped the tracks.
Officers spoke with a CSX Railroad employee who said he had been working in the area. The employee stated that he believed two children near the area hit a track switch while the train was moving, causing two rail cars to jump the tracks.
Chillicothe Police were able to locate the two juveniles, reports said. The CSX Train Master on the scene said that he did not want to press charges, but that he wanted the two kids to admit what they did.
Officer spoke with the two children and their parents regarding the incident. The children, ages 11 and 13, both initially denied their involvement. One child, officials said, eventually confessed to seeing the other youth pull the track switch.
CSX investigators told police that the railroad is considering filing charges. The Guardian contacted CSX for comment on the incident, and how two children were able to easily throw the track switch. We have not received a response from the company at the time of this reporting.
The train derailment, according to authorities, remains under investigation.
