CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The Purple Heart Committee is excited to announce that fundraising efforts
exceeded the initial goal needed to purchase and install the Purple Heart Monument in Veteran’s
Memorial Park.
It was through donated funds from local veterans’ organizations, businesses,
social organizations, and many individuals that this project was completed successfully. These
generous donors gifted $3,567.59 over the cost of the project and these proceeds have been
donated to Veterans in Transition which provides support to Ross County veterans.
“It is not always easy for a lot of our veterans when they leave the military,” stated Purple Heart
Committee Chairperson, Melody Lapczynski. “Unfortunately, that is why suicide rates among
veterans are so high. The Committee chose Veterans in Transition to benefit from the fundraising
because of the support and assistance that they provide to Ross County veterans.”
Veterans in Transition, Inc. (VITI) is a non-profit organization located in Chillicothe, Ohio. VITI
provides support and services to struggling veterans as they return to civilian life. The
organization helps veterans in securing housing as well as assisting with utilities, food, and
clothing.
The Purple Heart honors military personnel who were wounded and/or killed in combat with
hostile forces. The honor was first created by General George Washington in 1782, then known
as the Badge of Military Merit, and is the United States’ oldest military medal. The City of
Chillicothe was bestowed the designation of a Purple Heart City on June 28, 2021. A monument
was installed and dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 2021, in Veterans Memorial Park to
honor veterans. The park is located along Yoctangee Parkway and Part Street near downtown
Chillicothe.
