COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Highway Patrol released their New Year’s Holiday Recap Report.
Provisional numbers provided by the Ohio State Highway Patrol indicate that there were 10 fatalities on Ohio’s roads over the New Year’s holiday. Three of the victims died as a result of drunk driving. Five of the victims, troopers say, were pedestrians.
At midnight on Thursday, December 30, 2021, the four-day reporting period began, and it ended at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2022. Officials say there was a drop in the number of fatalities compared to the 14 reported in the last year.
In addition to the 229 OVI arrests, 59 distracted driving penalties, and 288 safety belt citations, troopers made 2,575 traffic enforcement contacts.
According to the report released by the patrol, Pickaway County ranked number one in the state for most traffic incidents.
The Ohio Highway Patrol encourages motorists to continue to call 677 if they see a driver intoxicated or under the influence of drugs behind the wheel.
