ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — Multiple accidents have been reported across the Scioto Valley as a winter weather storm moved into the state.
The Ohio Highway Patrol said that at least one person was killed Sunday as a result of icy roads in Ross County. It happened at around 5:15 p.m. on route 23 near the route 35 split.
Another accident on County Road 550 near Biers Run brought the roadway to a close.
The temperature outside was below freezing as of 6 p.m., which caused roadways to become skating rinks as sleet fell.
The sleet was projected to turn to snow, which forecasters said would accumulate 3-to-5 inches Sunday night in central Ohio. 4-to-6 inches was said to fall east of the I-71 corridor from Newark and Lancaster to Mount Vernon and down to Athens, where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect through midday on Monday.
Local law enforcement called in extra reinforcements by asking that third shifters clock in early to assist with the influx of calls.
Multiple counties issued snow emergencies, which included Ross County being under a level one.
Authorities advised motorists to stay home as conditions continued to deteriorate.
