MARION, Ohio — Today, Marion, Ohio Mayor Scott Schertzer announced his campaign for Ohio Treasurer of State with a pledge to bring small town values to Columbus.
“I’m running for state treasurer to work for you. To watch over every dollar this state spends and pinch every penny,” said Schertzer.
Scott grew up in Marion, and returned to his hometown after graduating from Ridgedale High School and getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies Education nearby at the University of Toledo, according to the Ohio Democratic Party.
“The people in power in Columbus have been too busy playing politics to see what is happening in towns across the state. They didn’t even notice the corruption happening right under their nose. We can’t afford to have someone in Columbus, neglecting their duty to look out for you and your tax dollars.
Scott spent 24 years as a classroom teacher, watching generations of young people in Marion study and work hard for a fair shot at a good life. Before that, Scott worked for State Treasurer of Ohio Mary Ellen Withrow, who helped inspire Scott to run for office in his hometown of Marion, the party said. After nine years on City Council, Scott was elected Mayor in 2008.

“I led my city through the Great Recession, the opioid epidemic, and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Through it all, there was no room for grandstanding, playing politics, and empty rhetoric. We had to roll up our sleeves, and find solutions that worked, day after day. There is no going home until the job is done. You deserve a treasurer you can trust, a treasurer that is working for you. I’m going to bring small town values to Columbus.”
Scott and his wife Ann live in Marion where they raised their two daughters, Sydney and Olivia. Scott is a lifelong member of the Marion First Presbyterian Church, and is also involved with dozens of local organizations.
He will face the state’s current Treasurer, republican Robert Sprague in November.
