WAYNE COUNTY, Ohio — An Ohio firefighter lost his life in a tragic accident on Monday.

According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, Lieutenant Philip Wigal, 35, was killed along I-71 in Wayne County.

The accident occurred after troopers with the patrol and EMS from the Town & Country Fire District responded to a previous accident along the interstate.

At that time, reports say, a commercial vehicle crashed into the fire truck, a patrol cruiser, and an additional vehicle.

Wigal was pronounced dead at the scene. Also, Trooper Steven Hill of the Ashland post of the highway patrol was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Town & Country Fire District Chief Adam Hory said, “It’s with a heavy heart I have to announce the line of duty death of Lt. Phil Wigal. Lt. Wigal was struck while working an accident scene. Please keep his family in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

Authorities say an investigation into the accident is ongoing. The interstate was shut down for several hours following the deadly crash.
