CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A large police presence behind a popular Chillicothe strip mall on Thursday attracted a lot of attention.
The scene was directly behind Hobby Lobby on Bridge Street at around 7:30 p.m.
Chillicothe Police had three detectives and an evidence technician parked behind the store. The County Coroner was also present. A uniformed police officer was there to guard the perimeter of the scene, which was sectioned off for several hundred feet with yellow crime scene tape.
Detectives were seen coming-and-going from a nearby brush area, which is known to be a homeless encampment. The Guardian was unable to independently confirm if the camp was involved in the police activity or why police were in the area.
Members of a local homeless prevention coalition arrived at the location after news broke of the police presence. One activist said he was concerned about “regulars” he serves with food assistance; police would not answer his questions at the scene.
The Ross County Coroner arrived at around 8:30 p.m. and removed human remains from the wooded area.
Law enforcement said they were unable to release any details to the media.
