KYIV, Ukraine— Members of the United States Congress, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Saturday.
The Speaker of the House became the highest-ranking U.S. government official to visit the battered, war-torn nation.
According to the Associated Press, Pelosi and the delegation met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv as the Russian Armed Forces refocused heavy attacks in eastern Ukraine.
Speaker Pelosi reaffirmed the United States commitment to the Ukrainian people. “We are here until victory is won,” said the Speaker in a video released online.
In a statement on Twitter, Pelosi said, “Our Congressional Delegation traveled to Kyiv and met with “President Zelensky” to send an unmistakable and resounding message to the entire world: America stands firmly with Ukraine. President Zelenskyy conveyed the need for continued security, economic & humanitarian assistance from the U. S. & our delegation delivered the message that additional American support is on the way, as we work to transform “the President of the United States” funding request into a legislative package.”
The delegations visit comes as Ukrainian forces rescued over 100 people from a steel factory in Mariupol, according to Zelensky’s Office.
