FAIRFIELD, Ohio — The Fairfield Sheriff’s Office released additional details on a threat that shut down the school district.
Shortly after 5 a.m. Superintendent Chad Belville posted on social media saying, “Fairfield Union Local Schools will be closed on Thursday, January 26 due to threats of violence made toward our schools overnight. The district is working with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department to identify those responsible for the threats. We believe the Sheriff’s Department has the situation under control, so we are taking this action out of an abundance of caution to give the Sheriff’s Department plenty of time to complete its investigation.
According to Sheriff Alex Lape, “deputies became aware of allegations of a non-specific threat of violence made against the Fairfield Union School District High School while investigating an unrelated incident. A currently enrolled juvenile student is alleged to have made previous threats through a social media account against the school to other students that were not reported at the time. Currently, there is no known direct threat against the School, School District, Faculty, or Student Body. The Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau is investigating the incident.”
Authorities say that they have spoken to the teens involved and that there is no immediate threat. The closure, the administration said, was out of an abundance of caution, and to give investigators enough time to get to the bottom of the allegations.
