CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Chillicothe residents interested in learning more about the city’s prehistoric past are in for a treat. Ohio University Chillicothe will be hosting a lecture by Gary Argabright on March 9 at 7:00 p.m. Argabright’s lecture, “Rediscovering Chillicothe’s Forgotten Mounds,” will focus on the prehistoric mounds that were once located between Paint Street and the Adena mansion.
According to Argabright, these mounds were a significant part of Ross County’s prehistoric man-made landscape during the time of the Hopewell peoples. However, due to farming and development, they have since been lost. Argabright’s lecture will not only provide an overview of these mounds but will also discuss what happened to them and give a progress report on recent attempts to re-establish their now-lost locations.

Following the lecture, the Chillicothe Transit System will provide a guided Trolley Tour to the sites discussed by Gary Argabright on March 11 and 18 at 10:00 a.m. The tours will depart from the Transit Depot on East Seventh Street. While the event is free, registration for the Trolley Tours is required due to limited seating. Those interested in attending the tours can call Chillicothe Transit at 740-773-1569 to register.
The lecture and Trolley Tours offer a unique opportunity to learn about the city’s prehistoric past and explore the areas where these forgotten mounds once stood. Don’t miss out on this exciting chance to rediscover Chillicothe’s forgotten history.
