EAST PALESTINE, Ohio — Alan H. Shaw, President and CEO of Norfolk Southern Corporation, visited the Village of East Palestine today to meet with the community members, local leaders, and Norfolk Southern railroaders who call the area home. Shaw also spent time with the crews working around the clock at the incident site following a derailment on February 6th, 2023.
Shaw released a statement after completing his second visit to the village in as many weeks, where he emphasized the company’s commitment to working closely with Ohio environmental and health agencies to protect the environment and the community. He said, “We are going to do the work thoroughly, completely, and safely.”

During his visit, Shaw also met with a group of Norfolk Southern railroaders who live in the area, including one whose home he visited. He talked with the railroaders’ friends and neighbors and appreciated the chance to hear their concerns. He assured them that Norfolk Southern is determined to earn their trust and do the right thing for their community.
Shaw also had a series of meetings with Mayor Conaway, several community leaders, Congressman Bill Johnson, Fire Chief Drabick, and several of his first responders. He acknowledged the frustration of the community members about the misinformation circulating about their community and assured them that the air and water are safe. Despite Shaw and other officials, residents continue to find dead fish and animals throughout Columbiana County. Some residents alleged that state officials and the railroad are not providing all the information on the environmental impact of the recent train derailment.
“In every conversation today, I shared how deeply sorry I am this happened to their home,” said Shaw. “We are going to do the right things to help East Palestine recover and thrive again.”
