ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — A high-speed chase went through three counties early Thursday morning before it ended in a crash.
Deputies with the Ross County Sheriff’s Office tried to pull over a car on Egypt Pike shortly after midnight, but the driver refused to stop and took off. Speeds reached more than 100 miles per hour as the pursuit snaked north on the back country road.
Law enforcement called for help from nearby agencies, including the Ohio Highway Patrol.
During the middle of the chase, the car stopped and deputies were able to smash out the driver’s window using a baton, but then the car took off, again. The chase went through Pickaway County, into New Holland, before entering Fayette County. It was there when the driver turned on Bloomingburg-New Holland Road.
The chase went over to route 62, where the driver ended up running the stop sign at the intersection and crossing into a field and crashing. Deputies said the driver and his passenger were from the Columbus area and were not familiar with the area, which is why they likely continued straight into a field, thinking the road continued on.
The man behind the wheel was not injured and was placed in cuffs. The woman, who deputies said was complicit in the chase, was trapped in the backseat after the crash. She was checked by medics and taken to the hospital. Both were charged with crimes stemming from the chase and each was listed in stable medical condition.
The reason the duo ran from deputies was not immediately released.
