CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Adena Health System, a once-respected hospital, attempted to deflect attention from mounting reports of sexual misconduct and other troubling incidents within its walls. Earlier this month, a letter signed by a select group of individuals, claiming to represent the hospital, urged the community to blindly trust Adena while dismissing all reports by media organizations in recent months about the hospital as false. However, a closer look at those signatories reveals a deeply disturbing pattern that calls into question Adena’s integrity and the actions of its highest-ranking officials.
One of the signatories is Dr. Anthony Freeman, a current Adena Board of Trustees member and medical practitioner. Freeman, who has been a vocal proponent of dismissing all allegations as baseless, himself has a troubling history of being tied to sexual remarks and misconduct. Court records show he was involved in a lawsuit against Adena, which was settled for an undisclosed sum, due to allegations of inappropriate behavior towards women by him. Despite this blemish on his record, Freeman remains employed by Adena and continues to wield influence on the board responsible for crucial decision-making.
The settlement agreement in question implicated four individuals, including Freeman, Jeff Collins, Dr. Jack Baker, and Eric Perdue.
“While Freeman was forced to face the consequences of his actions in the suit, it is alarming that the same scrutiny and accountability have not been extended to the other doctors at Adena who have been accused of similar misconduct,” said a local pastor close to the hospital who asked not to be identified. “This double standard raises serious concerns about Adena’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for both its staff and patients.”
Dr. Ben Trotter, an Adena employee and the county coroner, also signed the letter earlier this month. He is now under scrutiny for his behavior towards a grieving family. Disturbing images have emerged that depict Trotter engaged in actions that can only be described as deeply disrespectful and callous.
Trotter is also the key witness into a political meddling lawsuit involving Democratic Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney where a city employee was fired by the mayor after the employee tried to enforce zoning laws against fellow democrat, Trotter.
“It is beyond comprehension that someone entrusted with the solemn responsibility of providing comfort and support to families during their most vulnerable moments could behave in such a reprehensible manner,” the pastor said. “The fact that individuals like Freeman and Trotter continue to hold positions of authority within Adena raises significant doubts about the hospital’s commitment to upholding ethical standards and ensuring the safety and well-being of its patients. How can the community place its trust in an institution that not only harbors individuals with a history of misconduct but also appears to protect and enable them?”
The time has come for Adena’s board to address these serious allegations head-on, the pastor said.
“They must conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the claims of sexual misconduct and disturbing behavior, taking appropriate action against those found responsible. Adena must demonstrate a clear commitment to accountability, transparency, and the safety of its patients and staff.”
The pastor went on to say Adena needs to confront their demons.
“The community deserves better than a hospital that sweeps such grave issues under the rug, attempts to silence the truth, and allows individuals with troubled pasts to retain positions of power. Adena must urgently confront this scandal and restore faith in its ability to provide healthcare in an environment free from harassment, misconduct, and negligence.”
