SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio — A Franklin Furnace man was arrested after an armed standoff with police on Monday night.

According to Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman, deputies were dispatched to a home on Bussey Road in Wheelersburg after a woman called 911 to report that her son had forced his way into the house and was armed with a shotgun.

When deputies arrived, they could hear the suspect racking a shotgun inside the house. The suspect then pointed the shotgun at the deputies, who retreated and set up a perimeter around the house.

During negotiations with the suspect, he fired one round inside the house. The bullet went through a closet door, struck the floor, and then ricocheted into the outer basement wall.

After about an hour, the suspect exited the house with a pistol in his hand and surrendered to deputies.

The suspect, identified as Zachary Cunningham, 28, of 85 Jewell Road, Franklin Furnace, was charged with using weapons while intoxicated, criminal trespass, improperly discharging a firearm at or into habitation, aggravated menacing, domestic violence, and unlawful restraint. Additional charges, the sheriff’s office said, you be forthcoming.

Cunningham is being held on a $68,250 bond after appearing in Portsmouth Municipal Court today.

Sheriff Thoroughman said that the investigation is ongoing and the case will be presented to a Scioto County grand jury at a later date.
