CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Authorities are investigating the alleged theft of a $12,400 check from the Chillicothe Metropolitan Housing Authority.
The finance manager for the agency said she mailed the check to G.E. on June 22, 2023. The company later notified her that they had not received the payment.
The bank account reflected that the check had been cashed on July 6, 2023. However, the check had been altered and made out to an individual other than the intended payee.
Law enforcement was contacted and an investigator was assigned to the case. The investigator has been met with some resistance from the bank, where the check was deposited, the report read. The bank has said that they would require a subpoena to release the records of the account into which the check was deposited.
The investigator has taken steps to secure a grand jury subpoena. Concurrently, efforts are being made to identify and locate the individual who cashed the check.
The Chillicothe Metropolitan Housing Authority is grappling with the repercussions of the alleged theft. The investigation’s outcome hinges on the discovery of the bank records and the successful tracking down of the person who cashed the manipulated check.
The investigation is ongoing.
