GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio — A wanted individual was fatally shot on Sunday morning after firing upon Gallia County Sheriff’s Office deputies, according to a statement from Sheriff Matt Champlin.
The incident occurred around 10:40 a.m. just north of the Village of Vinton in Huntington Township. Deputies were attempting to make contact at a residence in search of an individual with an active arrest warrant. “When deputies… announced their presence, they were met with gunfire from within the residence,” Sheriff Champlin explained. The deputies subsequently returned fire, wounding the individual who later died from his injuries.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has taken over the investigation. “Further information regarding this investigation will be released at the appropriate time… in cooperation with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation as their investigation continues,” stated Sheriff Champlin.
No deputies were reported injured during the exchange of gunfire. The identity of the deceased individual has not been released at this time.
