CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — In response to an American Red Cross report of alarming blood shortage, Ohio University Chillicothe will host a crucial blood drive on Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Shoemaker Center, aiming to address the emergency shortage and prevent delays in lifesaving medical procedures, the organization said.

The nation currently grapples with the lowest number of blood donors in two decades, creating an urgent need for donations. Blood, a perishable product, can only be sourced from volunteer donors. With someone in the U.S. requiring blood every two seconds, a continuous influx of blood products is essential, according to the Red Cross.

Britney Hamman, assistant professor of instruction in OHIO Chillicothe’s nursing program, emphasized the university’s commitment to community well-being through blood donations. “This blood drive is our way of allowing staff, colleagues, and neighbors to help save lives,” stated Hamman.

Community members are urged to consider blood donation to ensure local hospitals have a steady blood supply when needed. Hamman added, “There’s no better feeling than knowing that your blood donation may give someone a second chance at life.” Even those unable to donate can contribute by promoting blood drives or volunteering at local drives.

Red Cross reported that all blood types are needed, with an emergency requirement for type O blood donors and platelet donors. In an effort to encourage participation, donors in February will receive a $20 Amazon Gift Card via email.

Individuals interested in contributing to this vital cause can make an appointment at the American Red Cross webpage. The blood drive at Ohio University Chillicothe serves as a critical initiative to address the current blood shortage and ensure the availability of blood for medical emergencies.
