WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, bipartisan legislation aimed at assisting family caregivers was unveiled by Reps. Mike Carey (R-OH) and Judy Chu (D-CA), alongside Sens. Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH). The Connecting Caregivers to Medicare Act seeks to enhance coordination between caregivers and Medicare beneficiaries, facilitating easier access to vital health information for caregivers.
“Family caregivers have sacrificed so much to be there for loved ones in need. It’s time Congress shows its support,” said Rep. Carey, emphasizing the importance of providing resources and assistance to caregivers.
The burdens faced by caregivers are significant, as noted by Rep. Chu: “The added challenges of navigating care through different providers, community services, and government agencies make the role even more difficult.” Rep. Chu stressed the need to streamline access to resources and support for caregivers.
Senator Tillis echoed these sentiments, recognizing the challenges caregivers face and the need to enable them to advocate for their loved ones effectively.
Senator Hassan highlighted the importance of the 1-800-MEDICARE hotline as a resource for seniors and caregivers, emphasizing the need to ensure it provides efficient support.
The Connecting Caregivers to Medicare Act aims to improve coordination of care by publicizing resources available to family caregivers through Medicare. It includes provisions to train 1-800-MEDICARE operators on providing caregivers with appropriate information and ensuring information is available in non-English languages.
Endorsed by 37 organizations, including AARP, the American Heart Association, and Paralyzed Veterans of America, among others, the legislation underscores bipartisan efforts to support and empower family caregivers in their vital role.
