South Central Power Company, a leading electric cooperative, announced the completion of the first phase of its innovative high-speed fiber internet service network, connectSCP. With a commitment to serving its member-owners, connectSCP aims to bridge the digital gap across rural Ohio.
Rick Lemonds, President & CEO of South Central Power, expressed the cooperative’s mission, stating, “Our goal is that every member of the cooperative has access to high-speed internet, whether it’s from connectSCP or another provider. We want to be part of the solution to closing the digital divide in the rural communities we serve with power.”
The inaugural phase of connectSCP brings fiber internet to the New Market area in Highland and Adams counties, with the Somerton area in Belmont County set to follow suit shortly. The project, spanning 30 months, will connect over 2,500 homes and businesses, offering symmetrical speeds starting at 500 Mbps through fiber-to-the-home technology.
Tom Musick, Vice President of Engineering and Broadband at South Central Power, emphasized the transformative impact of the initiative, stating, “This will be a game-changer for these previously unserved and underserved communities to attract remote workers, empower telehealth services and online schooling, boost economic development overall, and for families to enjoy the best of streaming, gaming and online communications from home.”
The cooperative’s efforts are supported by grants from BroadbandOhio, a state-sponsored broadband expansion program. South Central Power secured significant grant funds totaling $98,041,000 for projects in 14 counties across southwestern and eastern Ohio.
To mark the milestone, connectSCP, in collaboration with the Highland Chamber of Commerce, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 22nd at the cooperative’s offices in Hillsboro.
Residents and businesses in the service areas can now register their interest in connectSCP internet service by visiting connectSCP.com or contacting South Central Power directly for more information.
