HILLSBORO, Ohio — A 24-year-old man, identified as an “Incel,” was sentenced to 80 months in prison by a U.S. District Court today for attempting to conduct a mass shooting targeting women.
Tres Genco of Hillsboro, Ohio, confessed to planning a hate crime, specifically intending to shoot women at an Ohio university. He was apprehended by federal agents in July 2021 and has been in custody since.
“Everybody deserves to live without threats of violence or fearing acts of terror,” stated U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker. “Genco’s sentence reflects the need to protect the community from him for a significant period of time.”
FBI Cincinnati Acting Special Agent in Charge Cheryl Mimura emphasized, “Law enforcement, working together, stopped his deadly attack from happening.”
Genco, who identified as an Incel or “involuntary celibate,” maintained profiles on an Incel website and posted over 450 times on the platform. His online activities revealed a disturbing pattern of hatred towards women.
In one post, Genco detailed a plan to spray women with orange juice using a water gun, reminiscent of a similar act by notorious Incel Elliot Rodger, who committed a mass shooting in 2014. Genco also authored a manifesto expressing his intent to “slaughter” women out of “hatred, jealousy, and revenge.”
Investigations uncovered Genco’s preparations, including the purchase of tactical gear and firearms. He attended Army Basic Training but was discharged for poor performance.
Genco’s plans were intercepted in March 2020 when authorities discovered firearms and ammunition in his possession. He pleaded guilty in October 2022 to one count of attempting to commit a hate crime.
The sentencing underscores the severity of Genco’s intentions and the importance of preemptive law enforcement action to prevent acts of violence.
