CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The Ross County Jail continues to grapple with ongoing issues, as reports of contraband and potential weapons being made within the facility have surfaced.
On March 7, deputies were alerted by an inmate that other offenders were allegedly creating shanks, a term used for homemade knives or stabbing weapons, inside G-Pod. The inmate indicated that the contraband was hidden between the desk and wall in Cell G-3.
Upon inspection of the cell, jail staff discovered two toothbrushes protruding from behind the desk, along with two pieces of jagged metal. Additionally, signs of scraping damage to the wall were found, suggesting that someone may have been attempting to dig or sharpen an object.
Despite efforts to obtain fingerprints from the metal items, none were successfully retrieved. The case remains under investigation.
This incident adds to a series of problems the jail has faced over the past few years, including numerous overdoses, deaths, and attacks by staff on inmates.
