COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Division of Liquor Control and the Ohio Investigative Unit (OIU) under the Ohio Department of Commerce are urging Ohio residents to exercise caution this March. As St. Patrick’s Day and college basketball tournament games approach, Ohioans are reminded to celebrate responsibly when visiting local bars and restaurants.
Senior Enforcement Commander Erik Lockhart of the Ohio Investigative Unit emphasizes the importance of cooperation between patrons, bars, and restaurants to ensure a safe St. Patrick’s Day. He suggests that patrons can contribute to safety by appointing a designated driver and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption. He also urges liquor permit holders to train their staff to identify signs of over-serving and underage drinking.
Liquor permit holders are reminded that they are legally prohibited from selling alcoholic beverages to underage individuals or permitting them to consume such beverages on their premises. Checking IDs to confirm that customers are at least 21 years old, both at the entrance and at the point of sale, is a recommended precautionary measure. Staff members are also advised to compare the photo on the ID with the customer and to ask questions about the information on the ID.
Furthermore, establishments are encouraged to take steps to prevent staff and customers from bringing illegal substances, including cannabis, into their premises, onto adjacent sidewalks, or into parking lots.
Ohioans, whether they plan to celebrate at home or at a preferred establishment, are encouraged to plan ahead. This includes hydrating adequately, eating before consuming alcoholic beverages, and arranging for safe transportation.
Paul Kulwinski, Interim Superintendent and Director of Licensing at the Division of Liquor Control, reminds everyone that while this is an exciting time of the year, it’s crucial not to overlook the measures necessary to ensure that all Ohioans can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and enjoy the basketball tournament safely and responsibly.
Liquor permit holders and staff seeking to stay informed about the latest rules and regulations regarding the sale and handling of alcohol are encouraged to complete the OIU’s Alcohol Server Knowledge (ASK) program. The ASK program is available online, free of charge, and can be accessed via the Ohio Investigative Unit’s website.
