CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A traffic stop for expired registration this weekend led to the arrest of a man on drug and resisting arrest charges.
Officers reported pulling over a white Lincoln near the intersection of Old Eastern Ave. and E 7th Street on March 16th after a check revealed the vehicle’s registration had lapsed in November.
While speaking with the driver, Tina R. Crow, and passenger, Jamil A. Burgin, officers, per their report, observed Burgin handling a box. A search of Burgin’s person revealed a burnt glass pipe, commonly associated with methamphetamine use.
During the search, officers discovered nine orange pills and two smartphones on Burgin. Additionally, a hard object was felt in his waistband, which Burgin initially denied but was later retrieved and identified as contraband.
Following this, Burgin fled on foot while handcuffed. A brief pursuit ensued, and officers were able to apprehend him. A white bag containing a clear baggie with a crystal-like substance was found during a subsequent search.
The burnt glass pipe, digital scale with residue, and the baggie with the crystal-like substance were all recovered from the vehicle. The substance will be sent to a lab for analysis.
Crow was issued a warning for the red light violation and a citation for the expired registration.
Burgin faces charges of Escape, Obstructing Official Business, Resisting Arrest, and Drug Paraphernalia. Additional charges related to the suspected narcotics are pending lab results. He was transported to Adena Hospital for evaluation after exhibiting confusion and stumbling at the jail.
The investigation is ongoing, and Burgin’s two smartphones were seized on suspicion of aiding in drug purchasing and distribution.
