CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The historic Adena Mansion & Gardens, a significant landmark in Chillicothe, is reportedly grappling with rising operating expenses, major repairs, and unfulfilled promises from state officials.
The Adena Mansion & Gardens Society, which manages the site, receives approximately $160,000 annually from the Ohio History Connection, along with some additional maintenance support. However, sources suggest that this combined aid, along with self-generated income, falls short of meeting the escalating operational costs. According to recent tax filings, the society had an annual revenue of $240,751. Expenses were listed as $399,069, putting the society in negative territory.
The site employs only two full-time staff members and relies on a 74-year-old seasonal maintenance worker. These employees reportedly lack healthcare and retirement benefits, a stark contrast to those within the OHC’s umbrella. Sources claim that inconsistent assistance with major maintenance and the lack of proper equipment further hinder necessary upkeep.
Neil Thompson, OHC’s Media, and Public Relations Manager, maintains the organization’s commitment to preserving Adena. He cites ongoing maintenance efforts despite financial constraints but denies claims of neglect. The OHC asserts that it maintains regular visits and communication with Adena staff.
The Society strives to sustain Adena on an annual budget, relying on OHC funding, admissions, events, memberships, grants, and other sources. However, stakeholders remain concerned about Adena’s future.
Adena Mansion & Gardens, the 2,000-acre estate of Thomas Worthington, Ohio’s sixth governor and a U.S. Senator, holds significant historical value. The meticulously restored 1807 mansion, designed by renowned architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, houses original furnishings. The grounds also feature stunning formal gardens. Adena Mansion is a truly unique gem. It has represented the robust history of not just Ohio’s First Capital but the entire state for generations.
Bridging the funding gap, and garnering support from the community and state agencies is crucial to ensure this piece of Ohio’s heritage continues to inspire residents across the region.
