GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio — Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin has reported on a shooting incident that unfolded Friday morning in Springfield Township, highlighting a sequence of events that led to a suspect’s arrest.
According to Champlin, authorities were alerted at 11:28 a.m. regarding a confrontation at a residence on Boot Hill Road. Initial reports suggested that a property owner had been assaulted by a known individual who later returned to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and discharged it near the victim’s home before fleeing.
The alleged assailant was identified as Alfred K. Cordell III, 34, of Bidwell, Ohio, said Champlin, citing ongoing investigations and video surveillance footage obtained in the case. Champlin claimed that Cordell’s criminal history barred him from possessing a firearm.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Ohio State Highway Patrol, mobilized to locate Cordell. An alert trooper spotted him entering a family member’s residence on Midway Road in Bidwell, leading to his subsequent apprehension by deputies and troopers.
“A search warrant was sought for the Midway Road residence to further the investigation,” Champlin stated, adding that Cordell is currently in custody pending criminal charges related to the incident.
Authorities have not disclosed details on any injuries resulting from the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
