CHATSWORTH, California — MGA Entertainment has issued a voluntary recall of its Miniverse Make It Mini sets across the United States and Canada due to potential health risks associated with unused liquid resins contained in the products. The recall, announced on June 25, 2024, affects approximately 21 million units in the U.S. and an additional 1 million in Canada.
The recall was initiated after it was found that the liquid resins in the sets, specifically hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and isobornyl acrylate (IBOA), exceeded allowable limits under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act for children’s products. These resins pose risks of skin, eye, and respiratory irritation or sensitization if inhaled, touched, or ingested by children or adults.
According to MGA Entertainment, after the resins cure and harden, they no longer present a hazard. However, the liquid state of the resins during use is a cause for concern.
The affected Miniverse Make It Mini sets include various models and series such as “Make It Mini Appliances,” “Make It Mini Food,” and “Make It Mini Lifestyle.” These sets are packaged in spheres containing materials to assemble miniature imitations of appliances, food items, or lifestyle products. Some sets were also sold in dedicated boxes.
MGA Entertainment has received 26 incident reports related to the recalled products, including cases of skin burns, irritation, and respiratory issues. One consumer reported that their asthma was triggered by exposure to the resins.
Consumers who have purchased these sets are advised to immediately stop using them and contact MGA Entertainment for further instructions. Depending on whether the product has been opened or not, consumers may need to return the entire product or just the unused resins, accompanied by a photograph.
The products were sold at various retailers nationwide, including Target, Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar General, ALDI, and Hobby Lobby, and online through Amazon.com and other websites, from October 2022 to June 2024. Prices ranged from $7 to $13 for individual sphere sets and from $14 to $52 for boxed sets, depending on the model.
