COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio’s annual tax-free holiday kicks off tomorrow, marking the start of an extended 10-day shopping spree for consumers. This year’s event, running from midnight Tuesday, July 30, to 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, significantly expands upon the traditional three-day weekend offered in previous years.
Shoppers can now avoid sales tax on eligible items priced up to $500, a substantial increase from past years when exemptions were limited to $75 for clothing and $20 for school supplies. This expanded limit applies to both in-person and online purchases.
A new addition for 2024 is the inclusion of dining out at Ohio restaurants in the tax-free category. However, certain items remain excluded, such as services, watercraft, motor vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana-related products.
Consumers can purchase multiple qualifying items in a single transaction, up to the $500 limit. For example, a $600 purchase including clothing and shoes would be entirely tax-exempt.
It’s important to note that promotional offers like Buy One Get One (BOGO) deals may not fully qualify for the tax exemption.
The extended sales tax holiday aims to provide relief for Ohio families as they prepare for back-to-school and other purchases.
