CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – A local gun violence prevention organization is calling on the Chillicothe City Council to adopt a resolution condemning gun violence and to commit publicly to tackling the issue.
Brady Scioto Valley announced their appeal on social media, stating, “We are urging the Chillicothe City Council to pass a resolution denouncing gun violence in our community and to publicly commit to addressing this crisis head-on.”
Jason Salley, president of Brady Scioto Valley, expressed hope that the council would take action after the group submitted a drafted resolution. “We took the time to do the legwork and write a resolution. It is our prayer that council will put pen to paper and take a stand for the safety of all Chillicothe residents,” he told the Guardian.
Brady Scioto Valley is part of the national Brady organization, a nonprofit founded in 1974 that advocates for gun control and aims to reduce gun violence. Originally established as the National Council to Control Handguns, the organization was named after Jim Brady, who was severely injured in the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.
The Brady organization focuses on various initiatives, including:
- Advocacy: Promoting legislation to strengthen gun laws at state and federal levels.
- Education: Raising awareness about the impact of gun violence and safe gun practices.
- Grassroots Mobilization: Engaging communities and individuals in advocacy efforts.
- Legal Action: Holding gun manufacturers and dealers accountable for their role in gun violence.
Brady collaborates with numerous organizations and community leaders to comprehensively address gun violence, emphasizing the need for common-sense solutions to enhance public safety and reduce firearm-related injuries and deaths.
