SEATTLE, Washington— Popular outdoor gear brand Stanley has announced the recall of approximately 2.6 million of its Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs due to a potential burn hazard. The recall, issued on December 12, 2024, warns consumers to stop using the affected products immediately and seek a replacement lid from the company.
Details of the Recall
The recall affects all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold across the United States. The issue stems from the mugs’ polypropylene lids, whose threads may shrink when exposed to heat or torque, potentially causing the lids to detach while in use. This defect has led to burn injuries when hot liquids spilled unexpectedly.

Affected mugs come in 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. sizes, and were sold in multiple colors, including white, black, and green. Each product has a specific identification number printed on the bottom. The following models are included in the recall:
| Name | Size | Product Identification Number |
|---|---|---|
| Switchback | 12 ounces | 20-01437 |
| Switchback | 16 ounces | 20-01436, 20-02211 |
| Trigger Action | 12 ounces | 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825 |
| Trigger Action | 16 ounces | 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957 |
| Trigger Action | 20 ounces | 20-02034, 20-02746 |
Burn Incidents Reported
According to Stanley, there have been 91 reports worldwide of lids detaching during use, including 16 incidents reported in the United States. These incidents resulted in 38 burn injuries globally, two of which occurred in the U.S. Eleven of these injuries required medical attention.
The recall affects mugs sold between June 2016 and December 2024 at major retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, and others. Prices ranged from $20 to $50, depending on the model.
