COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 29-year-old Ohio state record for the white crappie has finally been broken, and it was by the slimmest of margins. Teresa Croy of Ottawa, Ohio, has officially set a new benchmark with a fish weighing 3.91 pounds, surpassing the previous record by just 0.01 pounds.
The impressive catch, which measured 18.5 inches in length, was reeled in on November 2, 2024, from a pond at the Glandorf Rod and Gun Club in Putnam County. Croy used an 8-pound monofilament line and a worm as bait to secure her prize.
Her achievement dethrones the previous record set on April 25, 1995, by Kyle Rock of Zanesville. Rock’s white crappie, also 18.5 inches long, weighed 3.90 pounds and was caught in a private pond near Zanesville.
Ohio’s state record fish are determined solely by weight and are certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee with support from fishery biologists.
