CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has confirmed the presence of avian influenza in waterfowl at Yoctangee Park following routine surveillance and testing by wildlife health officials.
While the risk of transmission to humans remains low, the Chillicothe Parks and Recreation Department is urging residents to take precautions:
• Avoid direct contact with wild birds and their droppings.
• Do not handle sick or dead birds—report sightings to ODNR at 1-800-WILDLIFE.
• Keep pets away from waterfowl and their habitats.
• Practice proper hygiene, such as washing hands thoroughly after visiting parks.
ODNR and local wildlife health officials are actively monitoring the situation and will continue testing and surveillance efforts. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
