COLUMBUS, Ohio – As St. Patrick’s Day celebrations get underway, law enforcement agencies across Ohio are ramping up efforts to keep roads safe by targeting impaired drivers. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is partnering with local law enforcement as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving campaign.
Over the past five years, St. Patrick’s Day has proven to be a dangerous time on Ohio roadways. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, there were 14 fatal crashes resulting in 15 deaths on the holiday between 2020 and 2024. Nine of those crashes were directly linked to impaired driving.
“Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day irresponsibly can have tragic consequences,” said Colonel Charles A. Jones, Patrol superintendent. “If you make the choice to drink, make the right choice to designate a sober driver and keep our roads safe for everyone.”
From 2020 to 2024, law enforcement made 311 OVI arrests on St. Patrick’s Day, with impaired driving accounting for 213 crashes during that time.
Authorities urge those celebrating the holiday to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using a rideshare service, or making arrangements to stay in a safe location if drinking. Party hosts are also encouraged to provide non-alcoholic beverage options and ensure that all guests leave with a sober driver.
Anyone who spots unsafe or impaired drivers on Ohio roadways can report them by safely calling #677 to alert law enforcement.
