COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man is behind bars, charged with allegedly attacking a 9-month-old baby. According to Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman, on Friday, January 10, his office received a report of a baby being transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital with broken bones, a black eye, and other injuries.
Upon the baby’s arrival at Children’s Hospital in Columbus, a specialized “child abuse team” of doctors attended to the infant. Sheriff Thoroughman noted that detectives subsequently visited 3621 Rhodes Ave. in New Boston, where they made contact with the mother and other individuals. As a result of the investigation, 30-year-old Kayla Sierra Williams was arrested.

The investigation continued, leading to the presentation of the case to the Scioto County Grand Jury on Friday, March 7, 2025. An indictment warrant for the father was filed on March 13th.
Detectives established a timeline of the injuries, determining that the oldest injury occurred approximately 10 days prior, and the most recent injury occurred four days before January 12th—the date Kayla Williams was arrested. Earlier on Friday, January 10th, the child had been seen at King’s Daughter Medical Center. Upon discharge, the mother was instructed to take the child directly to Nationwide Hospital. However, Children Services intervened when the child never arrived at Nationwide Hospital, instead arranging for the child to be transported to SOMC for treatment. Two other children were also removed from the residence.

On Saturday, March 15th, a Washington Township deputy located and arrested the suspect. Sammy D. Nash, 54, from Rhodes Ave, New Boston, has been charged with nine counts of endangering children, including two second-degree felony counts and seven third-degree felony counts. Nash is currently held in the Scioto County Jail without bond and is scheduled to appear in Portsmouth Common Pleas Court at a later date.
