COLUMBUS, Ohio — Federal immigration agents were reported to be active across Columbus Thursday morning, prompting concern from city officials and immigrant advocates.
Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein said he was aware of “reports that federal law enforcement officials, including ICE, are currently engaged in active operations in Columbus.” Klein emphasized that the Columbus Division of Police is not involved in immigration enforcement. “Our officers do not inquire about immigration status when folks call for help and do not aid federal immigration operations, as has been the case under this and every other presidential administration,” he said.
Klein urged residents not to intervene directly if they witness activity, but to call police if criminal conduct is observed. “We know many of our immigrant families, friends, and neighbors are feeling anxious and afraid. You are all valued members of our city, and we’re fully committed to your safety,” he said.
On‑the‑ground activists reported ICE agents stopping individuals at gas stations near Sawmill Road and Morse Road, monitoring bus stops and restaurant back entrances, and pursuing people at apartment complexes. Agents were also spotted near an Outback Steakhouse in Hilliard and along the freeway in Canal Winchester.
City officials said they are monitoring the situation.
