PIKETON, Ohio — A juvenile male connected to a gun-related incident at Scioto Valley Local School District over the summer has been reported missing, and the district said Friday it is taking precautions while emphasizing there is “no imminent threat” to students and staff.

The Scioto Valley Guardian reported Thursday on the August incident involving a firearm on campus.

Police records related to that case state the juvenile was not the only person in possession of the gun during the week it was discovered in August. According to the police report, the juvenile’s older brother was also allegedly in possession of the gun.

A social media post shared in the community said the “older brother” has been missing for two days and was last seen in Okolona, Kentucky. The post said the juvenile may be heading to Ohio or Indiana.

In a statement issued Friday afternoon, the Scioto Valley Local School District said it learned early in the morning of “an issue with a former student who now resides in another state and is currently missing.”

“As a result, and as a precaution for the safety of our students, we quickly verified all doors were secured, we distributed a picture of the former student to all staff, including bus drivers, alerted building SRO officers, as well as notified law enforcement offices,” the district said. “There is no imminent threat to students and staff. This notice is to make parents aware of the steps the district is taking in response to this issue.”

The district’s post was shared several times before comments were shut off.

An internal staff memo provided to the Guardian stated that if the student was spotted on campus, the administration should be notified immediately

The development comes as some parents in the community have been calling for the firing of district Superintendent Wes Hairston.

The Guardian will continue monitoring the situation and will publish additional details if local law enforcement issues an alert.
