CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey has commended Jonathan Davis of the Chillicothe Police Department for trying to save a crash victim after coming upon a burning vehicle while off duty.

In a letter dated Jan. 12, Hafey said Davis was traveling near State Route 752 and Winchester Road at about 9:52 p.m. Jan. 9 when he encountered a crash and “observed a vehicle fire.”

According to the letter, Davis went to help the driver, who “had been ejected from the vehicle,” pulled the man away from the flames, “applied a tourniquet,” and “performed CPR.”

“Unfortunately, the driver died due to the crash, but it was not because of a lack of effort on your part,” Hafey wrote.

The sheriff praised Davis’ actions, writing that his “dedication and bravery reflect great credit upon yourself, your family, and the Chillicothe Police Department,” and added: “You are an asset to your agency and represent them well.”
