McDERMOTT, Ohio — A 22-year-old McDermott man was arrested after deputies responded to reports of gunfire early Sunday morning and later determined the shooting claims were unfounded, according to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said its 911 Communications Center received a call at 6:04 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, from a concerned neighbor reporting that a man was standing in the roadway firing a gun. Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 2400 block of Pollock Road, David Thoroughman said.
When deputies arrived, they learned that a neighbor had already taken the firearm away from the man and brought him inside the house in an effort to calm him, the sheriff’s office said. The man told deputies he had shot someone who was allegedly breaking into his home and that the person was near a pond on the property.
Because of that statement, a detective was called to the scene to process evidence and begin an in-depth investigation, the sheriff’s office said. A search of the property found no evidence that another person had been present or had been shot. Investigators also located video evidence showing portions of the incident.
The sheriff’s office said investigators later determined the man was under the influence of drugs and that his claim about shooting an intruder was not supported by evidence. Detectives also found a social media post made prior to the shooting in which the suspect stated he was going to shoot up his stepfather’s house following a verbal altercation.
Kyle D. Mays, 22, of McDermott, was arrested and charged with having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony; discharging a firearm near a prohibited area, a second-degree felony; and two counts of improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation, both second-degree felonies, the sheriff’s office said.
Mays is being held on a $70,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Monday, Feb. 9, in Portsmouth Municipal Court, according to the sheriff’s office.
The investigation remains ongoing and could result in additional charges being presented to a grand jury at a later date, the sheriff’s office said. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sgt. Jodi Conkel at 740-351-1091.
