PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office has installed a new AI-powered body scanner at the county jail, replacing an outdated system used to detect contraband on incoming inmates.

According to the sheriff’s office, the upgraded scanner includes AI-assisted detection capabilities designed to help corrections staff more effectively identify drugs and weapons that inmates may attempt to smuggle into the facility.

Sheriff David Thoroughman said the upgrade came at no cost to residents.

“We were able to upgrade the system without adding financial burden to Scioto County taxpayers, while still improving safety inside the jail,” Thoroughman said. “We will continue to look for responsible, cost-effective ways to modernize our operations and strengthen public safety across the county.”

The sheriff’s office did not specify how the upgrade was funded, but indicated it will continue pursuing cost-effective modernization efforts throughout the department.
